DESCRIPTION This episode recounts the dramatic rescue and coronation of Joash, the hidden heir of David, against the violent reign of Queen Athalia of Judah. After Jehu's purge of Ahab's house in the north, Athalia — daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and widow of Judah's king — seizes power and attempts to extinguish the royal line by ordering the slaughter of her grandchildren. The narrative follows how one child is saved and secreted in the temple, preserved from a political massacre. For six years Joash lives in the care of Jehoshua and Jehoiada, protected within the temple as Athalia rules and promotes Baal worship. In the seventh year, Jehoiada organizes the commanders and temple guards, reveals the hidden prince, and orchestrates a palace coup. The boy is crowned and anointed before the people, Athalia is seized and executed outside the sacred precincts, and the Temple of Baal is torn down in a swift reversal of the queen’s policies. Under Jehoiada’s guidance Joash begins as a righteous king, overseeing repairs to the Lord’s temple and ruling faithfully while the priest lives. But after Jehoiada’s death the kingdom drifts back into idolatry; prophets are ignored, and Zechariah the priest is stoned on the temple grounds by the king’s command. This moral and political decline invites foreign invasion and internal conspiracy. The story closes with the tragic downfall of Joash: wounded in battle and ultimately murdered by his own officials. The episode traces a cycle of hope and failure — rescue, restoration, and reversal — while affirming that despite human weakness the Davidic line endures. The account is a compact study of power, faith, and the fragile stewardship of kingship in Judah.
