Giraffe Eyes, Ears and Face Part-4 In this video I show you tips on creating the facial features of a Giraffe. Using soft felt to make ears and adding core wool to shape the ears and make them stand up. During the video I sped up the film, don't worry i didn't say anything worth hearing. In the background is a movie, sorry, I think I heard a few bad words, my apologies. I use the Plain 38 triangle needle - general sculpting. .......the Purple 40 spiral - rapid, fine, for finishing. .......and my favorite is the Yellow 42 triangle - finishing the surface and fine detail. The core wool is the only wool I will use to sculpt the entire Giraffe head and neck, color comes later. Pipe cleaners and wire are wrapped with the core wool to begin the neck, this way you can bend the neck anyway you want. The main focus are proportion and symmetry. The key is to know what to edit and what to keep. Also how to lay the colors evenly and when to apply heavy texture to create the look you want. Think about the personality of the animal you want to portray. Practically anything can be needle felted. Give it a try. Sometimes you need more than one reference when working on your creatures. Having a good reference is paramount. After a while many characteristics become committed to memory. Make sure you have the foundation the way you want it before applying the color and details. If you can draw you can sculpt. Work all sides simultaneously. Take your time executing the details, too much detail can become too busy. Try not to enclose a shape, it becomes a distraction. Felt from natural fibers like wool is considered to be the oldest known textile. Using barbed needles the end product is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers together. Why anyone came up with bird brain, I am not sure, birds are smart. I love to needle felt birds, there are so many different species, and they are very colorful.
