In this conversation, Jason Mayo reflects on his experiences with childhood trauma, mental health, and the journey towards self-discovery and healing. He shares insights from his long-term therapy journey and how writing about his past has helped him understand himself better, especially in the context of his sobriety. Jason Mayo is the founder of Sober Not Subtle, a storytelling platform that raises awareness and helps normalize conversations around addiction and mental health. He’s a recovery coach, contributing writer for The Sober Curator, creator of the award-winning dad blog Out-Numbered, and author of the children’s books Do Witches Make Fishes? and The Boy and the Billy Goat. As a dad blogger, he was named one of Working Mother’s “25 Dads Who Rock,” alongside Barack Obama, Brad Pitt, and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Before switching to behavioral health, Jason owned and operated award-winning visual effects and animation companies in NYC. His debut memoir, In Case of Emergency, Break Childhood, is available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook. He got sober in 2010.
