Securing the Internet of Vehicles: Deep Learning–Driven Intrusion Detection

Recorded on 27 February, 2026 Speaker: Dr. Haleem Farman Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) has laid the foundation for large-scale interconnected digital ecosystems, and its evolution into the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is reshaping intelligent transportation and smart mobility infrastructures. As vehicles, roadside units, edge nodes, and cloud platforms continuously exchange data in real time, ensuring secure and reliable communication becomes a critical challenge. This talk explores advanced security mechanisms for IoV environments, focusing on deep learning–driven intrusion detection in dynamic vehicular networks. Special attention is given to the challenge of missing and incomplete data, which often arises from mobility, intermittent connectivity, and real-time communication constraints. The session introduces a robust framework that integrates real-time missing-data imputation with multi-layer convolutional neural networks to enhance attack detection, along with contextual security analysis techniques to strengthen threat identification. The presentation highlights how intelligent, data-aware intrusion detection architectures can form a foundational security layer for next-generation vehicular networks and 5G/6G-enabled smart mobility ecosystems. Speaker Bio Dr. Haleem Farman is a Senior Member of IEEE and received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan, in 2018. With over 15 years of experience bridging academia and industry, he currently serves as a Researcher at Prince Sultan University and as an Adjunct Professor at Whitecliffe, New Zealand. His research expertise spans the Internet of Things, smart cities, intrusion detection systems, ad hoc networks, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Farman has led and contributed to multiple funded research projects supported by organizations such as the British Council, RDIA Saudi Arabia, and Prince Sultan University. He has published over 60 research papers in leading journals and conferences and actively supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research. He serves as Vice Chair of the IEEE Smart Cities Awards and Recognition Committee and as an Academic Editor for SN Discover Artificial Intelligence and PLOS One, reflecting his continued leadership in advancing smart systems and intelligent urban technologies.
