Terá sido construída na dinastia dos Flávios, para consolidar a romanização do Noroeste Peninsular. A Geira romana situa-se principalmente na mata da Albergaria, sendo uma das reservas naturais do Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. A Geira romana é mais que uma antiga estrada romana, podemos perceber como eram engenhosos pela construção de pontes, marcos miliários e inclusive os locais de banho no rio caldo, situados na reserva natural. Como se encontram poucos vestígios da calçada a Geira é o presumível local de passagem da via romana, tendo em conta fatores como o corte do substrato rochoso e o nivelamento de cavidades naturais com pedra e terra. A ponte de S. Miguel foi intencionalmente destruída em 1642, durante as guerras da restauração independência. Esta ponte seria uma bela obra de arte com pelo menos dois arcos de volta perfeita. O local onde se encontram aglomerados os miliários, não é o seu ponto original de implantação. Grande parte dos miliários foram descobertos no início da década de 80 com a remoção de terra, na construção do posto fronteiriço da Portela do Homem.
