I hope you enjoy my playing of this, the first of two Arabesques by Debussy. I chose this piece because I used to enjoy playing it when I was younger and my favourite hobby was ballet. The best part of the ballet class for me was ‘Adagio’ where the ‘Arabesque’ movement is frequently used. However, musically speaking Debussy’s view of the Arabesque was ‘a line curved in accordance with nature’ and he described his two arabesques as having delicate tracery (just as in the delicate tendrils of plants) and in his music he aimed to mirror the patterns of shapes in nature made by the Art Nouveau artists of the time, by moving through many different keys in an intricate way. Arabesque was originally a term used to describe the complex ornamental designs in architecture or painting that trailed off into curlicues (decorative curls or twists) that could connect - such as in tile work. The arabesque position in ballet is where the standing leg is on pointe and the working leg and both arms are extended outwards like the curlicues of the ornamental pattern. In my playing I hope I have managed to portray some of Debussy’s musical intentions and I hope you enjoy the piece! Best wishes, Susan
