A pure house grants basic merit, which is tenfold at a cowshed, and continues to multiply at the bank of a tank, near the roots of sacred trees like Tulasi, Bilva, and Aśvattha, at a temple, on the banks of holy rivers, and especially on the banks of the seven sacred rivers—Gaṅgā, Godāvarī, Kāverī, Tāmraparṇī, Sindhu, Sarayū, and Revā. The merit grows further at the seashore and reaches its peak at a mountain summit. The most excellent place, however, is where one's mind feels at peace. The benefits of yajñas and charitable acts are also influenced by time—being most potent in the Kṛta Yuga, decreasing progressively through Tretā and Dvāpara, and being least in Kali Yuga. Certain astronomical times such as solar or lunar eclipses, equinoxes, solstices, and sun transits yield heightened merit. Association with holy persons and acts of charity to the deserving—such as brahmins who have mastered the Gāyatrī mantra—further enhance the benefits.
