These exercises had us work in a crew of five in order to capture cinematic shots of varying shot sizes, focal lengths, and key lighting. Week 1, Shoot 2 Assigned Role: Gaffer Objective: Capture the same tracking shot in a medium while using 3 different prime lenses Notes: I don't think my crew noticed it at all, but for the first few shots I was moving the light mid-take to track our subject as he moved down the hallway. Week 2, Shoot 2 Assigned Role: D.P. Objective: Set up reverse key lighting for a subject that can be used across a range of shot sizes. Notes: The hardest part was "setting the scene". In real life, DP's have time to review the script or subject matter to see how the motivations of the character and the direction can be reflected by the cinematography. Here, we were making those things up on the fly, and I rushed myself into setting a scene that I didn't feel 100% sure about. This made me inconsistent initially in my choices regarding things like lighting quality and temperature. Eventually, once we settled on time of day and our subject's action, it was relatively smooth sailing as we were all on the same page. We were so efficient that we were hours ahead of schedule and captured even more shot sizes than originally planned.
