Annapurna one is arguably the deadliest mountain on Earth. It’s earned a Guinness World Record for that grim title. For every three people who reach the summit, one dies trying. With a fatality rate of around 30%—it’s deadlier than Everest or K2. And most of those deaths happen on the South Face, a towering 3,000-meter wall of ice and rock. Now, that’s during the regular climbing season. But on December 20, 1987, four Japanese climbers decided to take on the South Face in winter—the most dangerous season of all. No one had ever survived a winter ascent on this face. And these four men would learn exactly why. They reached the top. But that was just the beginning of their nightmare.
