I wrote this song for a songwriting group I’m in. The prompt for the week is the word “brake”. A friend of mine had posted a picture of Speed Holman’s monument at the airfield in St.Paul that is named after him and it gave me the idea to write this song. Since I just finished it yesterday, my actual performance isn’t quite as smooth as I’d like yet, but new songs are fun to share, so I’m sharing it anyways! Also an edit… I say in the video that Northwest was in Bloomington… it was in Minneapolis. I mixed that up with Speed being born in Bloomington. When Speed Holman Took Flight Mikkell Johnson The man they called Speed didn’t ride the brake Motorcycles and planes – he loved to race Twisting and spinning his bird of black and gold He flew too fast, too wild to grow old With barnstorming stunts and wing walks so bold He danced through the clouds in loops and rolls His fearless stunts wowed the onlooking crowd Then flew for Northwest and made MN proud Chorus So go on Speed – flip and turn In your black and gold Laird- flying free as a bird You know the crowd cheered with delight When Speed Holman took flight He mapped the skies and charted the way Blazed the first routes where planes still fly today From stunts to mail routes he did it all Built a skyway so others could heed the call Bridge Legends like Speed never truly fade But he flew too fast one summer day His spirit still roams the runways and skies And fills the hearts of all who dream to fly
