The Alcazaba, in the heart of Malaga’s historical district, is an impressive structure that was built between eleventh and fourteenth centuries and functioned as a fortress and palace. It has a very uneven floor plan, with all its living quarters at different levels in order to adapt to the terrain and converged within two walled compounds. Some of the most notable sights within the edifice are the Arch of Christ (which for years served as a chapel), the Patio de Armas (Parade Ground), which has now been turned into an Arabic-style garden, as well as the palace zone, known for its stunning caliphal arch work that opens into a hall.
