The Microcosm's Hold function lets you capture audio into a buffer, and then process that audio with granular micro-looping effects while the buffered material repeats. We examine using the Hold function in conjunction with a few different Microcosm algorithms, to approach live looping in very malleable and dynamic ways. We also look at some MIDI hacks to get unusual functionality, including overwriting parts of the captured audio, and speeding the loop up to an inhumanly fast degree. 0:00 Hold on, now 0:18 The granular engine, the phrase looper, and the Hold function 1:11 The first version of the Arp effect, and activating Hold 1:38 Adjusting Time to change the subdivisions of the captured audio 1:56 Changing the number of Arp “steps” with the Activity knob 2:38 Tweaking the envelope of Arp steps with Shape 3:08 Using Tap Tempo to change the speed of the Arp effect (and the impact on the Time knob) 5:52 Switching to the second Arp preset 7:16 The third Arp preset 7:50 The Time knob as a loop “window” 8:38 The fourth Arp preset 8:48 MIDI Hack #1: Momentary Tap Tempo and inhumanly fast speeds 10:20 Working backwards through Arp presets 10:28 MIDI Hack #2: Momentary Replace to overwrite tiny sections of a loop 11:01 Finger-bouncingly short function durations 11:27 Using Momentary Tap Tempo for slower speeds 12:10 Momentary Replace at slower speed 12:34 Windowing redux 13:14 Momentary Replace at high speed, and checking the results at slow speed 14:05 Switching from Arp to Blocks 14:39 The changing behavior of Momentary Replace in Blocks 15:11 Moving to Mosaic 16:35 Returning to Arp, and “reclaiming” previously “lost” notes Deep thanks to the following Patreon supporters for helping to finance this tutorial: (in alphabetical order) Randolf Arriola Richard Atkinson Steve Ball and Tiny Orchestral Moments Dan Burke Steven Clements Phil Clevenger Hal Dean Tony Douglas Rejyna Douglass-Whitman Jeff Evans Christopher Evans Shawn Farley Christopher Fedak Jason Fink Jens-Christian Fischer Pepe Flores Gaetano Fontanazza Ross Garren Joel Gilardini Randy Greene Anthony Hancock Phil Heiliger Philipp Hirtler Bob Holub Fedor Indutny Ted Killian Zak Kramer Todd Lainhart Jeff Larson Rebecca Lee Ken Luke Scott Martin Dino Meneghin Jesse Nason Nostradamas Band Michael Peters Matt Pogue Timothy Renner Matt Rowe Jonathan Sherr Donald W.
