Many social scientists have become more open in making judgments about the situations that they study. Where does this leave anthropology’s traditional commitment to non-judgmental relativism? Drawing on new dialogues between anthropology and theology, Robbins compares both anthropological and theological approaches to judgment in order to consider what both sides might learn about how to approach the task of working successfully across cultures today. Joel Robbins is the Sigrid Rausing Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. He is one of the world’s leading anthropologists of religion and ethics, with a focus on the anthropology of Christianity. His most recent book, Theology and the Anthropology of Christian Life, explores the possibilities of using theological concepts in developing anthropological theories. Part of our fall 2022 lecture series, The Global Religious Experience.
