Dr. Yonathan Zohar has been studying aquaculture and marine biotechnology for over 40 years with one goal in mind: sustainable land based seafood. After receiving a grant of 10 million dollars from the USDA and further support from universities, businesses, and government agencies across the country, his dream may just be realized. But first, he’ll need to demonstrate that his program, Sustainable Aquaculture Systems Supporting Atlantic Salmon (SAS2), is a success, both economically and environmentally. For this segment of Maryland Farm and Harvest, we will be heading to IMET or the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, located right in Baltimore's inner harbor. IMET brings together scientists from multiple universities, such as UMCES and UMBC, to study marine biology, environmental sustainability, and biotechnology. The institute focuses on innovative research in areas like sustainable aquaculture, marine microbiology, and renewable energy from algae—helping to solve real-world challenges in ocean health and environmental science.
