Pan left of Aarhus cathedral exterior STORYLINE: Denmark’s royal family attended a “celebratory church service” at Aarhus Cathedral on Sunday. New King Frederik X, accompanied by his wife Queen Mary and his mother Queen Margrethe, waved to crowds gathered outside the 12th-century cathedral. The royal family drove 3.5 kilometres through Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, from the royal residence Marselisborg Castle to Aarhus Cathedral. Local media reported shopkeepers along the route were encouraged to decorate their shop fronts. The “celebratory church service” came exactly a week after Frederik, 55, was proclaimed king after his 83-year-old mother, Margrethe, signed her abdication. The hour-long service marked Frederik’s first official visit as king outside the Danish capital Copenhagen. Police expected around 70,000 people to line the royal route. Aarhus resident Christina Elmstroem brought her children to experience the “big, major event”. “It's a big, major event and it's historical. So, it was an opportunity to go and see the new king and my kids are very excited about it," she said. Elmstroem said she expects Frederik and Mary to change the Danish monarchy “in their way”. “Step by step, not big changes. I think they will keep a lot of the traditions, but also do it in their way, which I think is cool,” she said.
