We are excited to revisit Dr. Michael Coe at his home in New Haven, Connecticut, to discuss some of the challenges facing Mormon archaeologists attempting to prove the historical truth of their central scripture. Dr. Michael Coe is the Charles J. MacCurdy Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Yale University and Curator Emeritus of the Division of Anthropology at the Peabody Museum of Natural History. He is an expert on the Maya, who inhabited the same part of Mexico and Central America where Mormon scholars say the events of the Book of Mormon took place. Chapters 00:00:00 Horses are native to North America, but died off 10,000 years before the events in the Book of Mormon (600 BC to AD 421); horses weren't reintroduced until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century 00:04:32 When is a horse not a horse? Deer, tapirs, and translations 00:12:50 Mesoamerican stones, weapons, and currency---but never any gold plates 00:22:36 Maya textiles were made of woven cotton; silk (as mentioned in the Book of Mormon) only existed in Asia 00:24:39 Wheels and chariots? Not for transport, only on Mesoamerican toys 00:27:26 Peccaries vs. pigs; mastodons vs. elephants 00:31:42 Things that should be in the Book of Mormon (but aren't) if it were an actual historical portrait of the Mesoamerican Period 00:35:29 Apologists wiggle out of all these anachronisms by saying they only apply to Maya civilization, not Nephite civilization 00:38:23 Even BYU linguists admit there are no traces of Hebrew or Egyptian in the Mesoamerican languages 00:42:01 Dr. Coe's experiences with the LDS people, and what he would say to someone who wants to know if they should base their life on the Book of Mormon 00:52:05 Audience comments 00:56:31 Closing remarks and Dr. Coe's advice for a life well-lived
