Why do teachers give tests? To determine if a student understands the information. Why does the government require certain tests for vehicles? To see if the manufacturers have made the vehicle to an agreed upon standard. In fact, every test we conduct is to make sure that a certain standard has been met, or that there is truth in what's being tested. So... Why would a believer test God? Only one answer comes to mind - to see if He is faithful. That's not good. Context: Jesus is into a 40 day fast, has been tempted by the devil the whole time and we are now at a critical juncture where the devil will test Jesus's faith in God the Father. VS 9: Assertion by the devil that as the Son of God Jesus could attempt suicide and the angels would come and save Him. VS 10 - 11: The devil quotes from Ps. 91:10 - 11 but leaves out a critical part of the verse... Ps. 91" For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In their hands they shall Elbear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. Hermeneutics - Observation, Interpretation, Application (Take notes) Application - Ps. 91:11 - 12 is a promise to a believer who is dwelling in fellowship with the Lord for protection. The key is that one is dwelling with the Lord and not off doing something selfish to make God prove Himself. VS 12: Jesus quotes from Deut. 6:16 (first part of the verse) Deut. 616 "You shall not tempt the Lord your God as you tempted Him in Massah. Massah is helpful, take notes... VS 13: Triumph over the temptation doesn't mean it's over. The devil will come back... Though the devil has to flee, he is fleeing until he has a more opportune time. Key: Trust God, don't test His faithfulness. Don't be like Massah and grumble when things don't look right.
