(9 Mar 2001) English/Nat xfa Speaking in Washington, D-C on Friday, the Yugoslav Ambassador expressed his concern about worsening violence in the Balkans. Milan Protic was particularly troubled by the recent actions of alleged Kosovo Albanian extremists on the Macedonian border. He warned that the violence could destabilize the entire Balkans region. Though he praised international attention and the return of Serbian forces to patrol the border, he also down played their potential effectiveness in reducing the violence. He criticized the buffer zone, calling for its removal and also suggested that the international community pressure Kosovo Albanians to let go of their ambition for a "Greater Albania." SOUNDBITE: (English) "But unfortunately, the violence in Southern Serbia has spilled over to Macedonia which of course provoked the attention of the international community. And as you know, the decision of the NATO headquarters from yesterday was that the Serbian forces could enter into a zone between Kosovo, Serbia and Macedonia one kilometer into our territory. SUPER CAPTION: Milan St. Protic, Ambassador of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in USA SOUNDBITE: (English) "It (the buffer zone) was instituted as a free security zone and it turned out to be the most insecure zone in the entire Europe. So it developed into a monster. And we believe that it should be stricken out." SUPER CAPTION: Milan St. Protic, Ambassador of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in USA SOUNDBITE: (English) "Much more international pressure (is necessary) on domestic Albanian in Southern Serbia to exact a compromise and to give up the concept of Greater Albania" SUPER CAPTION: Milan St. Protic, Ambassador of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in USA Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
