The idea of the "sex talk", the awkward conversation that parents have with their kids once they reach a certain age, is pretty widespread and mainstream in our culture, and the idea often goes unquestioned. Here I want to question it. I begin by explaining that the awkwardness of the "sex talk" is a result of the fact that parents have been keeping a secret from their kids, hiding information from them, and that this sends weird and unhealthy messages about sex, ones that reinforce the stigma of sexuality as a taboo subject and one associated with shame. I explain that this can leave kids more vulnerable to sexual abuse. I conclude that I think it's healthier to be open about sex with your children from the beginning, answering questions honestly and frankly as they come up, and avoiding the sort of intense censorship of adult conversations around kids, in ways that could send the implicit message that sex is a taboo subject or one associated with shame. I explain that this approach completely eliminates the need for "the sex talk", and also helps break down the unhealthy culture of shame associated with sexuality.
