Let’s go back to the 90s and explore the Pokémania phenomenon and the Pokémon merchandise, tie-In campaigns, toys and action figures, the trading card game, video games, anime and the fan hype in this nostalgic retrospective just in time for the Pokémon 30th Anniversary! The hype and excitement around Pokémon in the late 90s were off the charts. It was a phenomenon that took over our lives since we had the anime airing on Kids WB everyday with the adventures of Ash Ketchum, Misty and Brock in the Kanto region. That cartoon served as great advertisement for the toys and the videogames. Gen 1 was Pokémon Red and Blue and later we got Yellow Version or Special Pikachu Edition for Gameboy. And Hasbro toys took the action figures that Tomy made in Japan and brought then to the west as the Pokémon Battle Figures. Hasbro released almost all the 151 Pokémon from the 90s! They also made thinkchip figures, combat figures, bouncers, sliders, plushies, the Tiger Electronics Pokedex and more. The electronic talking Pikachu plush, or I choose you Pikachu, was very popular. We got fast food tie-ins as well from KFC and from Burger King. BK had toys inside pokeballs and trading cards for Pokémon the First Movie (Mewtwo Strikes Back) and they sold very well but were also controversial. Burger King also made fast food toys for the sequel Pokémon the Movie 2000. There were many Pokémon tie-in books like the sticker album from Merlin, coloring and activity books, stickers, the Pokémon Handbooks, and more. There were spin off games for both the Nintendo 64 and the Gameboy color like Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Stadium and Hey You Pikachu. The Pokémon Trading Card game was very popular. I had mostly cards from the Team Rocket expansion. I did not get much from the TCG base set, jungle expansion and Fossil Expansion. I never had the holographic Charizard. But I had many like Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur, Eevee, and others. The Pokémon franchise was a huge staple of 90s kids’ lives. It was one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of the nineties and while Gen 2 and up went down in popularity it was still popular in the 2000s and has now risen again and become the biggest IP and Franchise of all time. Happy 30th Anniversary to Pokémon and congratulations to Gamefreak and Nintendo.
