So in the spring / summer of 2008 the most adventurous and constantly intriguing band Sparks embarked upon the unthinkable: performing every single one of their (at the time) 20 albums live in their entirety to lead up to the premiere of their (at the time) new album ‘Exotic Creatures of the Deep.’ This all took place in England and I’m forever jealous of those who were lucky enough to attend. I myself had literally just graduated high school in the States and could in no feasible way be there; however, those of who weren’t lucky enough to be there in person were thankfully able to watch the shows via live stream. Most of us have still been holding out hope for an eventual “official” release of these shows, where several of the songs performed were surely done so for the first and only time, but 13 years later…it doesn’t look promising. I got a little tired of waiting myself and had been wondering recently if it would be at all possible to edit a complete show from the fan-shot videos and so forth we have available thus far, and so this crazy project began. So let’s talk about this first album / show…this has definitely been a “holy grail” of sorts for Sparks fans, as it has seemed for nearly 13 years now that no adequate footage was captured (save Sparksfannr1’s audience capture of “Slowboat” for which we give our thanks) but I have a few very generous anonymous sources helping in this new archival journey and now the very first show of the 2008 Sparks Spectacular can finally be enjoyed by all! Let’s go ahead and get out of the way as well that you should most definitely not expect “perfection” or high technical quality here. The main stream source is a little better but still with those video “freezes” throughout. You’ll also hear echoes of the ghosts of the original album versions of “Wonder Girl” and “Fa La Fa Lee” splice in and out to help cover gaps unfortunately present in all current available sources. This is also so far definitely the most “creative” I’ve gotten in the editing, as the source for the last 2 songs (“Mr. Nice Guys” and “England”) was not only lower quality but, instead of video “freezes,” would result in just a black screen. However, another generous and anonymous source gifted me with plenty of photos of the gig to help cover these whenever they appear. You’ll also notice some nostalgic overlays during the encore song “England” consisting mainly of the official clip / trailer from Edgar Wright’s recent and fantastic documentary ‘The Sparks Brothers.’ Also note that there is no “intermission” covered in this edit as the better audio source I used for the last 2 songs excised any stagnant audience noise. But with all this aside, who amongst us Sparks fans can complain when we so luckily FINALLY have this elusive and unique performance? No copyright infringement intended, all rights belong to their respective owners. I make no money from this project and it is merely a new edit by a longtime fan FOR the fans.
