The Story: For Heather Clements, sketchbooks are serious playful business. Heather has made her living from art since 2010, through award-winning paintings displayed in galleries across the US and through murals sprawling across giant marina’s and Downtowns. While creating so much art for the world to see, Heather has been an avid personal sketchbooker the whole time. Heather views her sketchbook as an extension of her creativity, a personal therapist, and a playground for all things art and mental/emotional exploration. Normally within those pages there are no rules and anything goes. But one weird day Heather decided to challenge herself to create a book where every spread combined two of her loves: watercolor and paper-cutting. What happened next was borderline obsession as she spent her supposed days off of work (as an artist, ha) giddily crafting pull-tabs of mushrooms emanating out of eye sockets, flaps revealing skeletons and centipedes behind a self portrait, a rotating octopus scene, and so many more weird and wonderful creations. The pages got more and more personal as Heather’s tragedies, anxieties, and hopes spilled from her unconscious onto the paper. Like all of Heather’s sketchbooks, this book was intended to be personal. Yet out of sheer love for these pages, she couldn’t resist sharing on TikTok where it ironically went viral, with endless comments begging for a published copy. Now, with Popositiion Press, they are making that dream a reality with “Pull Me Apart!” “I didn’t make it for anyone but myself. But I suppose paradoxically, when we create something truly for ourselves, it’s what others connect with most.” -Heather Clements The Book: Published by Poposition Press, The Standard Edition of Pull Me Apart is an 8″ x 10″ hardcover book with eighteen pages of interactive artwork. The book will have a combination of die and laser cutting on heavy weight uncoated paper. Of the nine double page spreads in the book, three of them span both pages on their spreads, while the rest are their own individual pieces of movable art. This is a unique project for Poposition Press as there are no pop ups in it at all, in fact everything in Pull Me Apart is what’s known simply as a movable – including multiple pull tabs, rotating wheels, lift-flaps and more.
