Originally, it was a major rice trading centre (hence the name "Khao San," which means "milled rice" in Thai). In the 1980s, budget travellers started staying in the area due to its cheap guesthouses and proximity to major attractions like the Grand Palace. Over time, it became a hotspot for backpackers, filled with hostels, street food, bars, and travel agencies. By the 1990s and 2000s, Khao San Road had fully transformed into a lively tourist hub, known for its vibrant nightlife, affordable shopping, and eclectic mix of cultures. It was even featured in The Beach (2000), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, cementing its reputation as a global backpacker haven. Today, Khao San Road continues to be a must-visit spot for travellers, offering a blend of Thai culture, street markets, and nightlife, though recent efforts have aimed to modernize and regulate the area. ⚠️ Our videos are copyrighted material owned by the channel DaisyRoutes.
