KFJ Explores Season 4 Episode 3 Abandoned Cairo Hospital / Southern Medical Center - Cairo, IL 07/29/21 On todays explore, join us as we venture to the nearly forgotten ghost town of Cairo, IL and to it’s famously abandoned Southern Medical Center. This hospital, originally St Mary’s, was built and first opened in the 1950s. Soon after, as racial tensions rose and Cairo’s population rapidly declined, this hospital quickly ran into financial troubles, leading to the closure of St Mary’s Hospital in 1973. Less than a year later, however, this hospital reopened, now as ‘Alexander Development Corporation Community Hospital’ which later was changed to ‘Southern Medical Center’. With the town around still suffering, however, the hospital soon ran into financial troubles once again. As a result, this hospital closed it’s doors for good in 1988. Since it’s closure, portions of this hospital have been demolished and the rest has been cleaned up a number of times. Today, this hospital still sits abandoned, leaving behind nothing but deteriorating shell of the building it once was.
