Part of the 2024 Writer's Workout Conference! Fact Checking is an investigation; some authors may see this as "fact-establishing" within their text. This talk discusses what it means, what it requires, and how quickly credibility may be lost vs. how painfully it is earned. We'll talk about identifying facts, documenting your process, research options, a process for dealing with uncertainty, and some legal/ethical quandaries (obviously, this is not legal advice) such as telling the truth about bad people, declining to lower the bar, and when to withdraw support for a project. About Charlotte: Charlotte Eugénie Bismuth is the author of the true crime story BAD MEDICINE (OneSignal), which Kirkus called “A gripping read tailor-made for the silver screen.” In BAD MEDICINE, Bismuth chronicles her time as the Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan who successfully prosecuted the landmark case of Dr. Stan Li, the first doctor in New York state to be charged with and convicted for the overdose deaths of his patients. Bismuth has served as a consultant for the Prosecutors' Center for Excellence, and currently works with nonfiction authors on a freelance basis to shape, fact-check, and line edit their books. She is a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia Law, and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (“Sciences Po”) in Paris.
