A 2022 trip to Bragança, Portugal, gave us an introduction to the Caretos. The Careto masks appear as murals and there are souvenirs as well. I had no idea that the roots of the Careto traditions predate Christianity and the Romans, spanning back in time 2,000 to 3,000 years. In this video I've tried to condence the Careto history as succinctly as possible. The story is more complex and worth further study. The main intention of this video is to introduce the Careto to you if you've never heard of them. This ancient Pagan celebrations can be misunderstood, especially with the devilish look of the masks and costume. Even their wild celebrating may condure the wrong impression. They certainly are mischeivous, but there are reasons for this too. Simply put, these celebrations are a celebation of life. All that aside, their ways are entertaining, to say the least. What you're actually witnessing is history in action. The nearby city of Podence has been recognized as a UNESCO site for cultural heritage. The villages in the northern Iberia have maintained and resurrected the Careto customs from being lost in time, and this deserves to be applauded. As many of these villages have experienced a loss of their population in modern times, the vibrant traditions were threatened to become lost forever. The journey to find several areas where the Caretos still celebrate also took us off the beaten road, so to speak. We found beautiful old villages that have also defied the passage of time. The people we met in the village were so kind. The village of Arvas, also included in this video, even fed us a taste grilled lunch! It felt like a sort of thanks for our visiting and helping these customs to be recognized.
