Around 12:41 AM on October 25, 2024, Officer Joey Lewis with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to the scene of a disabled motor vehicle that had driven over the train tracks near Cleveland Avenue. He arrived on scene and noticed that a red 2018 Honda Civic had apparently driven over the tracks before sliding down an embankment towards Cleveland Avenue. After speaking with the other officers on scene, he proceeded to make contact with the driver of the Honda Civic, who was identified as 23-year-old Angela Cheng. As he was speaking with Angela, Officer Lewis detected an odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Angela initially denied consuming any alcohol, and even claimed that her friend was driving the car. She even stated that her friend had fled the scene on foot, but refused to identify who she was. She later admitted that she had been at a comedy club earlier that evening. Since Officer Lewis suspected that Angela was impaired, she was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. However, Angela refused to perform any field sobriety exercises. Based on the motor vehicle crash, the odor of alcohol, her indicators of impairment, and her unwillingness to perform the field sobriety exercises, Angela was placed under arrest for DUI. After placing her under arrest, Officer Lewis read her the Georgia Implied Consent Notice at the scene, but she refused to submit to a blood test. Angela was transported directly to the Clarke County Jail for further processing. She was booked into the Clarke County Jail and issued the following summonses: DUI (40-6-391(a)(1)) and failure to maintain lane (40-6-48) Angela was eventually released on a $4,600 bond pending her court appearance. On November 18, 2024, Angela pleaded guilty to DUI and failure to maintain lane. As a result of her convictions, Angela was sentenced to 72 hours of house arrest confinement, 12 months of probation on each count, and 240 hours of community service. She was also required to pay a total of $1,344 in fines. ----------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting our channel (email us for more information).
