During World War II, the Allied invasion of Saipan in 1944 was one of the fiercest land battles in the Pacific theatre. Monuments and sites with shipwrecks, plane wrecks, and other historic underwater heritage sites are protected just like historical sites on land. As such, the sites in Saipan’s lagoon (Tanapag lagoon) are protected by several local and Federal laws. Including Saipan’s Maritime Heritage Trail. Watch my other videos from Micronesia: • Micronesia 🇫🇲 🇵🇼 🇲🇵 🇬🇺 🇺🇸 During World War II the successful U.S.-led Allied invasion and capture of the island (June–July 1944) was one of the fiercest land battles in the Pacific theatre. Some 3,500 U.S. troops died in the fighting, and nearly all of the 30,000 Japanese defenders were killed; thousands of Japanese civilians also died, many jumping to their deaths off Banzai Cliff, at the northern end of the island, rather than face capture. Saipan became an important U.S. military air base during the last year of the war, and between 1953 and 1962 it was under U.S. naval jurisdiction. Banzai Cliff is a historical site at the northern tip of Saipan island overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Towards the end of the Battle of Saipan in July 1944, hundreds of Japanese civilians and soldiers jumped off the cliff to their deaths in the ocean and rocks below, to avoid being captured by U.S. forces. Some who jumped did not die and were captured by American ships. Suicide Cliff is a cliff above Marpi Point Field near the northern tip of Saipan. It is another location where numerous Japanese civilians and soldiers committed suicide by jumping to their deaths in July 1944, in order to avoid capture by the United States. The precise number of suicides here is not known, but numbers in the thousands have been cited. The Shoan Maru was a steamer built in 1937 and registered in the Imperial Japanese Navy in September 1941. On 27 January 1943 she is hit by a torpedo, and towed to Saipan for repairs. On 14 January 1944 she is damaged in an air attack, and again so on 23 February 1944. She sinks in that last air attack or during the invasion of Saipan in June 1944. The Kawanishi H8K was a large four-engine Japanese flying boat, called "Emily" by the Allied forces. It was used in Pacific operations during World War II for reconnaissance, bombing, and transport by the Imperial Japanese Navy, and was one of the hardest aircraft to shoot down due to its speed. One Kawanishi H8K lies in Tanapag Lagoon, upside down and scattered over a wide area. During the Battle of Saipan an amphibious counterattack was launched by Japanese forces using landing craft. Several craft loaded with soldiers were launched from the seaplane base to make a surprise attack farther along the coastline. However, they were discovered by U.S. forces and sunk. Two of these Japanese Daihatsu landing craft are found where they sunk in the battle of Saipan 1944.
