Meditative and down-to-earth, the musician Bombino, originally from Niger, evokes the expansiveness of the Sahara in his work. Born in 1980 as Goumar Almoctar in the nomadic Tuareg camp of Tidene, Bombino grew up during periods of intense political unrest. He fled with his family to Algeria in 1990 and returned to Agadez in 1997. In 2007, after political unrest in Niger increased, Bombino fled the country again, this time to Burkina Faso. I was struck by his technique in playing the guitar with his fingers and without a plectrum, reminding me a lot of John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, of whom Bombino is a great admirer. His “Desert blues” is something very original, which he could perform by composing songs in French, like other African musicians.
