BIOMOD UCalgary 2025 - AeroSense Project - MindFuel

AeroSense is an air monitoring biosensor designed to detect airborne viruses, such as COVID-19, in real time. Unlike traditional diagnostic methods that require individual testing, AeroSense continuously scans the air in high-risk environments like hospitals, airports, and other public spaces, providing a sustainable and non-invasive solution for mass disease surveillance. By detecting viruses in the air before symptoms appear, this technology enables early intervention and helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases. AeroSense operates using an aptamer-based fluorescence detection system. The aptamer, which is a short, single-stranded DNA or RNA molecule, is engineered to specifically bind to the spike protein (S protein) of SARS-CoV-2, found on its surface. These aptamers are modified with a fluorophore (FAD) and a quencher (BHQ-1). When no virus is present, the quencher suppresses the fluorescence signal. However, when the viral particles enter the system, the S protein binds to the aptamer, causing a conformational change that separates the fluorophore from the quencher. This separation results in the emission of a fluorescent signal, which is detected by optical sensors, indicating the presence of airborne SARS-CoV-2. The system can be reset using chaotropic salts and a buffer wash, allowing it to be reused multiple times. AeroSense provides several key advantages over traditional COVID-19 testing methods. Current PCR testing has generated over 15,000 tons of plastic waste worldwide, with most of it being incinerated and releasing harmful chemicals into the environment. AeroSense eliminates this waste by offering a reusable detection system. Additionally, many rapid antigen tests are not universally accessible, leaving vulnerable populations without timely diagnostic tools. By deploying AeroSense in public areas, individuals, especially those without access to frequent testing, can receive immediate alerts about potential exposure, allowing them to take necessary precautions such as isolation or mask-wearing. With this, AeroSense supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Good Health and Wellbeing and Reduced Inequalities. Beyond COVID-19, AeroSense has the potential to detect other airborne pathogens, making it a great tool for future pandemic preparedness. Ultimately, AeroSense has the potential to prevent future pandemics while promoting environmental sustainability and public health equality.
