Student Volunteer Army | Ten Years On

Ten years ago Sam Johnson created a Facebook event to coordinate some students digging silt, post-earthquake. A decade later, over 160,000 volunteers have continued to use the tools in their pocket to create change. We’ve captured a snippet of that journey here. Today, we’re remembering the 22nd February 2011 and thinking of everyone whose lives were changed that day. It’s true that, in times of crisis, we often see the best of people - and the formation of SVA demonstrated the power of community in droves. A decade later, we’re still here & empowering volunteers across Aotearoa! However, for today, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the impact of over our first ever major mobilisation and the events that led to that. Kia tūao, e tū ki te ao.
