Welcome to Gentle Japan. Today I’m walking through Jōshin-ji (浄真寺) in Setagaya — a temple I had somehow never visited, despite living so close. A friend suggested I come here, and I’m grateful she did. From the moment I stepped through the large front gate, the scale and presence of this place stayed with me. 🏯 About This Location / この場所について Jōshin-ji is known for its peaceful grounds, wide courtyards, and beautiful seasonal colors. When I arrived, a soft overcast light made the ginkgo leaves glow even more deeply. A blanket of yellow covered the pathways, and the entire temple felt gently illuminated — even with people enjoying the scenery in their own way. One of the main halls was under construction during my visit, but there was still so much to take in. Near the end of the walk, I found a quiet path lined with statues resting beneath a canopy of gold and orange.
