ITALIANO: La costruzione abbraccia la sommità di un ripido scoglio roccioso posto in posizione dominante sopra la piana del Sarca. Il centro storico di Arco sorge alla base di questa formazione rocciosa e pare che il complesso di mura del castello un tempo costituisse un unico sistema difensivo con quelle del borgo sottostante. L'edificazione si attesta attorno all'anno Mille ad opera dei "nobili liberi" della comunità con scopo difensivo. Nel 1196 Federico d'Arco dichiara il castello bene allodiale degli abitanti del borgo; successivamente la famiglia dei d'Arco ne divenne unica proprietaria. Vari e plurimi furono i tentativi d'assalto alla rupe del castello ad opera dei signori di Seiano, dei Lodron e delle truppe della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia: per quanto il borgo venisse posto sotto attacco e conquistato, il castello riusciva a resistere in ogni occasione.Il Settecento segna l'inizio del declino del castello; nell'agosto del 1703, nell'ambito della guerra di successione al trono di Spagna, l'armata francese capitanata dal generale Luigi Giuseppe di Borbone-Vendôme penetrò nella zona del Basso Sarca, strinse d'assedio Arco, conquistò la città e bombardò il castello, la cui guarnigione si arrese. Iniziò così la rovina del castello che venne sfruttato come cava di pietra dagli abitanti del borgo sottostante per riparare le case danneggiate dai bombardamenti e costruirne di nuove. Nel frattempo la famiglia dei Conti d'Arco si divise in due rami: uno dimorava in Arco ed a Mantova, il secondo in Baviera, a Monaco. Il castello rimaneva tuttavia proprietà in parti eguali dei due rami. Nel 1927 la contessa Giovanna d'Arco, marchesa di Bagno, acquistò il castello, divenendone unica proprietaria; cinquantacinque anni dopo, nel 1982 il Comune di Arco acquistò il castello ed altri beni della Fondazione d'Arco in Mantova. ENGLISH: The building embraces the top of a steep rocky cliff in a dominant position above the Sarca plain. The historic center of Arco rises at the base of this rock formation and it seems that the complex of walls of the castle once constituted a single defensive system with those of the village below. It was built around the year 1000 by the "free nobles" of the community with a defensive purpose. In 1196 Federico d'Arco declared the castle to be an allodial property of the inhabitants of the village; subsequently the family of the Arco became the sole owner. Various and multiple attempts were made to assault the cliff of the castle by the lords of Seiano, the Lodron and the troops of the Serenissima Republic of Venice: although the village was placed under attack and conquered, the castle was able to resist on every occasion. The eighteenth century marks the beginning of the decline of the castle; in August 1703, as part of the war of succession to the Spanish throne, the French army led by General Luigi Giuseppe di Borbone-Vendôme entered the Lower Sarca area, besieged Arco, conquered the city and bombed the castle, whose garrison surrendered. Thus began the ruin of the castle which was used as a stone quarry by the inhabitants of the village below to repair the houses damaged by the bombings and build new ones. In the meantime, the family of the Counts of Arco split into two branches: one lived in Arco and Mantua, the second in Bavaria, in Munich. However, the castle remained the property in equal parts of the two branches. In 1927 the countess Giovanna d'Arco, marquise of Bagno, bought the castle, becoming its sole owner; fifty-five years later, in 1982 the Municipality of Arco bought the castle and other assets of the Arco Foundation in Mantova.
