Men walking while holding up pictures of Khamenei and flags STORYLINE: Hundreds of supporters of the Hezbollah militant group gathered south of Beirut on Sunday to mourn the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes. In the rally organized by the group, mourners chanted anthems and slogans paying tribute to Khamenei and in solidarity with Iran. They waved the flags of Iran and Hezbollah, some beating their chests. Hezbollah is Iran’s most powerful proxy in the region, and over the years has played a crucial role in backing Tehran-linked groups in several regional conflicts. It considers Khamenei as a key reference point for its ideological doctrine. Hezbollah, in a monthslong war with Israel in 2024, lost its top political and military leadership, including long-time Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah. The group has not taken military action in solidarity with Tehran, though Lebanon’s political leadership has scrambled to ensure that the tiny Mediterranean country stays out of the conflict, amid fears of a spillover.
