COEB, Centre for OptoElectronics and Biophotonics (COEB), established in July 2011, is a research centre hosted by the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. OPTIMUS focuses on research topics, in advanced photonics science and technologies, with potential impacts in areas such as 1) Very-high-capacity optical communications, 2) Nanophotonics & biophotonics and 3) Other related broadband information technology systems. The Centre's research activities are divided into four programmes namely 1) Novel photonic materials & devices, 2) Photonic nano-structures & applications, 3) Optical fiber technology and 4) Advanced optical communications. OPTIMUS' vision is to become a centre of excellence in research and development in various emerging areas of photonics. Our mission is to develop innovative photonics techniques and technologies that have significant impacts on the human society. We also conduct research in the various areas of photonics, which is relevant to the industry, and establish excellence in photonics teaching and research for the photonics industry. Together, we are inspired to become a leading research centre in advanced photonics sciences and technologies, as well as their applications.
