For more than 150 years, the Suez Canal in Egypt has been the key to trade between Europe and Asia. But a new project has recently been launched that aims to transform the current course of trade routes, turning Iraq into a new hub of international trade. Iraq's bold plan is to build what some are calling a new Silk Road. A modernized network of roads and railroads that will stretch 1,200 kilometers from the Persian Gulf through Baghdad and Turkey to Europe. Estimated at nearly $17 billion, this mega-project includes the construction of one of the world's largest ports. However, both the Iraqi Prime Minister and the Turkish President seem to agree that this new road is well worth the investment, as it will ultimately significantly develop the region's economy. Thailand These waters are home to an incessant flow of container ships. Every eight minutes, a ship passes through what is surely the main artery of world maritime trade. It is not the Panama Canal or Egypt's Suez Canal, but the Strait of Malacca in Southeast Asia. Bordered by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, the Strait is an essential gateway to Asia, linking it to India, the Middle East and Europe. Today, almost 40% of the world's maritime trade passes through this route, which is on the verge of saturation. A situation that could soon change radically. Between geopolitical conflicts and acts of piracy, the region is currently experiencing tensions that could turn the course of international trade upside down. Above all, one of the bordering countries, Thailand, is preparing a colossal land bridge megaproject to save time for ships and pocket the economic gains represented by their passage. As you can imagine, today I am taking you to Asia, to discover one of the most ambitious contemporary projects in the world. India IMEC In April 2023, the world changed in a major and very concrete way. China, long famous for being the world's most populous country, suddenly dropped to second place. The country taking its place? India. Now, more than a year later, India is home to a staggering 1.44 billion people, nearly 18% of all human life on Earth today. India's median age is also almost a decade younger than China's, and India's largest city, Delhi, is larger than any city in China, with its 34,000,000 inhabitants. This all sounds impressive enough, but to much of the surrounding world, India's growing population is often seen more as a cautionary tale about overpopulation than the rise of a new global superpower. However, that perception may be about to change. Today we will look at one of the most exciting projects taking place on the world stage: the $20 billion Indian trade corridor that competes directly with the Suez Canal, and with China.
