Kusatsu Onsen waters are extremely hot, reaching 50°C in temperature. Simply adding cold water would affect the quality.So back in old days, people devised a way to bring down the source temperature by using long wooden planks to stir the hot water.(=Yumomi) Shirahata Hot Spring Source is the oldest source in Kusatsu found by Yoritomo Minamoto in 1193. Sainokawara Park is one of the best spot you must visit. Along the Onsen Steam River, hot springs gushing and the hot steam rising from each of these springs.Tradition says that demons live here and the place was feared as the Damon's Springs because of its view.
