The African Leopard Hi everyone, and welcome to my channel! Today, I'm going to be talking about the African leopard. The African leopard is a subspecies of the leopard, native to many countries in Africa. It is widely distributed in most of sub-Saharan Africa, but the historical range has been fragmented in the course of habitat conversion. Leopards have 1 also been recorded in North Africa 2 as well. Characteristics The African leopard is a medium-sized cat, with a body length of 2.7 to 3.3 meters (8.9 to 10.8 ft) and a weight of 30 to 70 kg (66 to 154 lb). It has a spotted coat, with yellow or tan spots on a golden background. Its spots are usually small and round, but they can be larger and more irregular on the back and sides. Leopards have long, powerful legs, and large, sharp claws. They also have excellent eyesight and hearing. Behavior Leopards are solitary animals, and they are nocturnal hunters. They hunt a variety of prey, including antelopes, monkeys, warthogs, and impalas. Leopards are also known to eat carrion. They are excellent climbers, and they can often be seen resting in trees. Threats The African leopard is threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Habitat loss is the biggest threat to the African leopard, as its habitat is being destroyed to make way for agriculture, forestry, and development. Poaching is also a major threat, as leopards are killed for their fur, meat, and bones. Human-wildlife conflict is also a problem, as leopards sometimes attack livestock and people. Conservation The African leopard is listed in CITES Appendix I, which means that it is illegal to trade in leopard skins and other products. There are also a number of conservation organizations working to protect the African leopard. These organizations are working to educate people about the importance of leopards, and to help protect their habitat. I hope you enjoyed this video about the African leopard.
