Bučimiš - Bulgarian Folk Dance from Western Thrace arr. by Rafael Piccolotto de Lima Slippery Rock University Flute Ensemble Dr. Cassandra Eisenreich, Director Hunter Karenbauer, Percussion Program Notes: Bučimiš (boo-chee-MEESH) is one of over 30 different Bulgarian words for the poison hemlock plant. The plant is common all over Bulgaria, and much of the rest of the world as well. The origin of its name is unknown; the melody is undoubtedly that of a now forgotten folk song which made mention of hemlock in its first line. Villagers today, however, know no such song. There are many YouTube versions of music called Bučimiš. All of them are instrumentals – none have lyrics. Unlike western music, much of Bulgarian music uses uneven measures which gives their music a different feel then what we are used to in western culture. Melodies in Bucimis vary, but all have a common meter of 15/16, or to traditional Balkan musicians and folk dancers QQQQSQQ (quick vs. slow).
