This ancient city on the trade routes of Central Asia was once the capital of the state of Sogd and was called Kesh. In 329 BC, Alexander the Great conquered it, bringing with him Hellenistic culture and Greek cults. For a millennium, Shahrisabz was under the influence of various dynasties. Shahrisabz is the birthplace of Amir Timur (Tamerlane, 1336–1405), who in the 14th century ordered the construction of new fortress walls around the city, making it not only a centre of trade and crafts but also of science and culture. The Spanish embassy, en route to Timur's court in Samarkand, stopped in Kesh, and envoy Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo described it as a city surrounded by an earthen wall and a deep moat with drawbridges at the entrances. During the Timurid era, Shahrisabz became a cultural centre of the East, visited by great scholars and poets such as Navoi and Jami. Timur considered making it the capital of his empire but chose Samarkand instead. The city has been known for its crafts since ancient times, particularly carpet weaving and fine silk embroidery. The craftsmanship of Shahrisabz has a thousand-year history, having absorbed the culture of the peoples connected by the Great Silk Road. Shahrisabz also has significant transport importance, as the Great Uzbek Tract, which follows the route of Marco Polo, passes through it. The main attraction of Shahrisabz is the Ak-Saray Palace, the residence of Amir Timur, which took almost a quarter of a century to build. Dorut-Tillavat, a place for reflection and Quran reading, was established at the burial site of Shamsiddin Kulal, the founder of Sufism and mentor of Timur's father. The Dorus-Siadat family mausoleum houses the graves of Timur's two sons, Ghiyasuddin Muhammad Jahangir (1356–1376) and Mughisuddin Umar-Sheikh (1356–1394).
