By Henry Lazarus (1815-1895) I. Agitato II. MInuet - Allegro assai III. Adagio molto sostenuto IV. Allegro assai Joe Clark, Tim Coffey, clarinets George Bernard Shaw wrote of Henry Lazarus: “He was the best clarinet player in England; when you were sitting behind Costa at the Opera, you listened for certain phrases from the clarinet just as you did from the prima donna, except that you were much less likely to be disappointed in the former case.” Lazarus was in truth clarinetto supremo for close on fifty years of Queen Victoria’s reign. He played in many orchestras and held a number of teaching appointments. In his solo work he was particularly noted for obbligato playing. Lazarus wrote a method book still in use today. Among a wide variety of pieces and technical exercises are three expansive clarinet duets, the third of which will be performed this evening. ~Pamela Weston & Oliver Davies Performed at the Townsend Congregational Church on August 5, 2018.
