In this video, we continue to look at group 1 - the alkali metals. First we look at how the group 1 metals react with water, producing the alkali metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas. I give you balanced chemical equations for the reaction of lithium, sodium and potassium with water. We then look at why the reactivity of the group 1 metals increases as we move down group 1, in terms of the ability of the metal to lose the outer electron to form a positive metal ion. This depends on the attraction between the positive nucleus and the negative outer electron. We look at how this is affected by both the radius of the atom and the amount of shielding.
