Historical estimates suggest that tens of thousands of lives were lost in these events - with around 78,000 of Hiroshima’s 350,000 residents perishing instantly, and at least 40,000 of Nagasaki’s 240,000 citizens losing their lives on impact. Today, with conflicts taking place across the globe, concerns about nuclear proliferation and discussions about nuclear weapons continue. BBC journalist Jordan Dunbar examines how these events in August 1945 shaped world history and what lessons can be learned to prevent similar tragedies. From the post-war arms race to recent global tensions, we see the enduring impact of these significant moments.
