On April 5, 2024, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office received a call about a reckless driver in a white Kia SUV. Deputy Hernandez located the vehicle on US-1 and his dash camera captured the vehicle crossing the center line several times. Deputy Hernandez initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The 30-year-old woman claimed to be coming from Key West, but denied consuming any alcohol. Deputy Hernandez expressed his opinion that the woman might be under the influence, so he asked her to perform standardized field sobriety tests. The woman refused and was placed under arrest for DUI. Throughout the encounter, she was belligerent and insulting towards Deputy Hernandez. At one point, Deputy Hernandez opened the back door of the police vehicle to ask the woman what items she wanted to take to the jail, and she hopped out of the vehicle in an apparent attempt to escape. She had to be taken down to the ground by Deputy Hernandez and Deputy Turek. Both deputies then had a difficult time getting her back in the vehicle. At the detention center, she continued to be a belligerent and difficult individual. She ultimately refused to submit to a breath test and she attempted several times to get up from the chair she was sitting in and leave the breath testing room. Her charges and the outcome of her case are discussed at the end of the video.
