How To Grow Catnip In Water - The Kratky Method

If you want to grow your own catnip then try this easy hydroponics method. With this Kratky method you can easily grow catnip in water but also other herbs like basil or mint for example. Things you will need: a big bucket with lid some mesh pots or 1 big one pH meter + EC meter rockwool (I used Cultilene) hydroponics nutrients pH down (something to get your pH level in your water down) nepeta cataria seeds (the most common variety of 'true' catnip) Cut some holes in the lid to fit in your mesh pots. Cut your rockwool to fit the pots and give them a good flush, let them soak and drain. Shake off some excess water. Press the seeds on the rockwool and let them germinate. I used a propagation box. When the sprouts are big enough you can put them in your bucket. Best pH value for catnip = 5.5-6.5 (mine was 5.9 at the start) best EC value (your nutrients value) = 1.0-1.6 (I started a bit lower at 0.8) Let the rockwool in the pots touch the water so the roots have access to it. I had to rotate my lid every day or every other day just to make sure it wasn't growing too much into one direction. After that, the catnip is growing really fast. It's a chemical component of the volatile oil in catnip. It only takes one or two sniffs of that oil before susceptible cats start feeling that elated sensation. Though intense, that euphoria only lasts for about 10 minutes for most cats. Some get really playful like our cats Mella & Maia, while others remain mellow and calm. When eaten catnip has a calming effect. If your cat eats a lot of catnip, it may experience an upset in the stomach leading to vomiting and diarrhea. Fresh catnip is more potent than dried one, so make sure you don't give them too much. Once the effects are wearing off, it'll be about two hours before kitty responds to catnip again.
