Reinforced Earth South Africa | Gautrain Project

The Gautrain Rapid Railway, a PPP project between Gauteng Provincial Government and Bombela Concession Company, enlisted RESA for design and material supply to 80 structures on 38 sites. These included retaining walls, bridge abutments, and viaducts, designed to withstand vibration, seismic activity, and serve for a century. While the Gautrain uses AC power, adjacent Metro lines use DC power. Steel reinforcement was chosen over synthetic due to the risk of electrolysis near electrical infrastructure. TerraTrel facing, both aesthetically pleasing and electro-safe, was applied to one structure. The project aimed to ensure long-lasting, resilient railway infrastructure in partnership with various stakeholders.
