In the dusty summer of 1886, in the storied frontier town of Dodge City, Kansas, a man named Jack Mercer—known simply as “Mercer” to strangers—spends his days breaking wild horses and his nights alone atop the ridge outside town, watching the sunsets bleed across the prairie. Jack is a man of few words, marked by the scars of a troubled past, and the townsfolk treat him with a mixture of suspicion and distance. One evening, as a thunderstorm cracks the sky, Jack hears desperate cries by the river. Battling the roaring, rain-swollen rapids, he risks his life to save a young boy—a half-drowned orphan named Billy Cooper. The child clings to Jack as if to the last solid thing in the world. But when Mercer brings Billy into Dodge City, he’s met not by gratitude, but by cold glares and muttered warnings. Sheriff Willard Knox, a lawman with secrets of his own, refuses to let Billy stay at the orphanage, and even the kindly nurse, Miss Abigail Reed, warns Jack that the child is better off far from town.
