A viral conversation is circulating online claiming that Black Americans do not appreciate Africans or African immigrants and their contributions in the United States. Some are even arguing that Black Americans should show more gratitude for immigration and African influence. In this video, I review the discussion and respond to the claims being made. The conversation raises bigger questions about identity, immigration, cultural contributions, and the relationship between Black Americans and Africans in the United States. This topic connects to a larger historical discussion about Black American cultural creation, civil rights history, and the role Black Americans have played in shaping American society and global culture. My work focuses on documenting the innovations, history, and cultural impact of Black Americans—especially through music history and cultural scholarship.
