Narrated by my grandson, Gavin Cooney, 9 years old. Trek from Hotel Las Torres to Base Las Torres - the base of Torres del Paine, and back. Elevation Gain - 3,250 Ft. 11 Miles (18 Kilometers) 8 Hours. They were up early for breakfast. Today was another test – trekking from the Hotel Las Torres to the Base Las Torres, the base of the three blue rock formation towers after which the Torres del Paine National Park is named. “Paine” means “blue” in an ancient Indian language of this area. The trekking at first was easy, and they took a break at Refugio Chileno. Soon after leaving Refugio Chileno, they were scrambling over boulders, gaining more than 3,000 feet in elevation in the 18-kilometer trek. It took almost five hours to get to the towers, but the spectacular view of the towers reflecting in the blue-green glacial lake at Mirador las Torres made it all worth it. The sight was breath-taking! While their guide Thomás used his filtered pump to fill their camel back water bags, they lingered a little longer to admire the amazing view of the three towers against the cobalt blue sky at Mirador Las Torres! Soon, they set off on the three-hour trek down the mountain for the last night at Hotel Las Torres. Tomorrow, they start the remaining 80 miles, six-day trek from Hotel Las Torres to Paine Grande on the shore of Lago Pehoé, completing most of the bucket list Torres del Paine O-Circuit trek.
