Muslims, Christians and Dalit are denied beef-eating which is illegal in most of India. However, they are still haunted by the false accusation of beef-eating. These armed vigilantes organize on WhatsApp. They go around hunting suspected beef eaters, cow traders, or dairy farmers. Most of the victims are Muslims except in two cases where the victims were Dalits. Indian media say about 97% of lynching cases occurred after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in May 2014 His party, BJP, leaders publicly justify the lynching. Police often stalled prosecutions of the attackers. The Human Rights Watch says that the use of rhetoric by members of the ruling party is spurring a violent vigilante campaign against the consumption of beef and those engaged in the cattle trade.
